Space Planning
Taking The Guess Work out of Change
Overview:

Space Planning will dramatically improve the rooms' traffic flow and lay out for staging purposes. Planning a furniture layout is best done with an empty room. You need to arrange the furniture so it enhances on the architectural feature of the room or the focal point

Rather than arrange your living room by centrifugal force - everything shoved to the edges - coax furniture into the room with a cozier setup.

Final Space Planning Tip:  Don't Forget...

Weight:

• Visual Weight is how heavy or massive the object appears to the human eye. Objects that are large colourful, dark or patterned, tend to appear heavier than small, light coloured items. If you have a small room, you will want to have less visual weight, balancing with smaller items. Glass furniture and white furniture has less visual weight, which will assist with making it appear to have more space.
Pick your purpose, then choose the arrangement from these five that best suits it.
1. Game Night Arrangement

Every night is game night when your family room has plenty of seating and playing surfaces.

Furniture-Arranging Tips:

· Pulling maneuverable seating into the room means more people can join the fun.

· The sofa and upholstered chairs are within reach of the cocktail table—and a deck of cards or a board game. The chairs scoot and twist to gain the best vantage of the TV.

· The coffee table’s top lifts to reveal storage so it can serve as a playing surface, then conveniently stash board games, cards, puzzles, and video games.

2. Book Lover Arrangement

If fine literature is your favorite companion, here’s a room designed for reading.

Furniture-Arranging Tips:

· Sofas are the most versatile seating for avid readers, who can sit, lie, or slouch any way they please as the plot thickens.

· Two sofas facing each other accommodate at least one reader each and make a great setup for hosting a book group. They’re still situated to watch TV, on the odd night you’re out of books.

3. Intimate Gathering Arrangement

Invite people (or just one special person) in for the evening, and you’ve got the perfect hangout.

Furniture-Arranging Tips:

· Just because a sectional has a corner doesn’t mean it has to stay in the corner! Drag it out a few feet and maximize its multiple configurations—or cuddle factor. By placing it closer to a pair of chairs, you eliminate shout-across-the-room conversations.

· Rounded armchairs hug the curves of your back, offering a comfortable spot to spend hours chatting or watching a movie.

Kid-Friendly Arrangement

Transform a living area into a kid-friendly space without letting little ones totally take over.
Furniture-Arranging Tips
· Starting on the diagonal with the TV armoire in the corner lets the sofa follow suit. This arrangement leaves more floor space, perfect for high-energy kids who use the living room as a playroom, as well as a family hangout.

· The love seat, chair, and ottoman fill in with plenty of single, snuggle, or snooze seating.

 TV-Priority Arrangement

Whether you’re hooked on Masterpiece Theater, you’re attached to TiVo, or you never miss a big game, create this comfy room for watching.

Furniture-Arranging Tips:

· The three-seater sofa and two recliners are positioned at optimal angles for TV viewing.

· Two cube ottomans or floor cushions mean greater flexibility around the big coffee table. Use them to plop your feet, perch for pizza, or flop for a front-row seat.

· Round end tables provide easy-to-reach spots to set a drink or bowl of popcorn.

· The console table behind the sofa is ideal for a movie night buffet of snacks and beverages or a box of tissues for a two-hankie flick

· Low bookshelves behind the sofas provide storage for favorite volumes and a spot to place table lamps for on-target reading lights.

· The large bench ottoman is great for table space, additional seating

· A game table and chairs are perfect for poker night, complicated board games, puzzles, and extra setup space.

· The coffee table is large enough for all to reach, yet the oval shape keeps the piece from feeling bulky or too expansive.

· Well-placed table lamps and a floor lamp make light quantity and quality easy to control, while strategically placed side tables provide surface space for beverages.

· The angled sofa acts as a short wall divider for a kids’ nook—defined by a mini table and chairs. It also blocks toy clutter, which makes the space inhabitable for grown-ups, too.

· The angled love seat sets up a smaller nook, this one ideal for a toy bin (or clutter hider).

· The TV armoire adds plenty of hiding space for DVDs, videos, and CDs. Doors are important, too. They swing shut when you need to limit TV viewing.
