The Emotional Ups & Downs of Remodeling
Remodeling is an emotional endeavor. The very thing that keeps you safe and centered — your happy home — is turned into a dusty, chaotic, noisy jobsite. On top of that, you're asked to make decisions on colors and materials that you will have to live with for a long time. The combined stress is beyond belief.

What J.Bailey Design Reno's know and what most homeowners don't is that the peaks and valleys of a homeowner's emotional state are predictable. As you can see by the below graph created by construction consultant Guy Giguere, emotions are high during the design stage, low during the contract-signing stage, high through demolition ("We're finally getting started!") and framing, then take a long, long decline through drywall, plumbing and electrical. Happily, emotions start to rise again as the finish work begins. Even when you know about this normal rollercoaster of emotions, it's not easy to live through
Process Discription
Remodeling projects seem to have some common high and low points for many owners. If you are a seasoned remodeling veteran, you may already know what to expect and may not need to read the following process description. However, if you have not lived through a remodeling project before, you are probably approaching your project with some degree of both anxiety and excitement. The purpose of this page is not to cast a shadow of doubt on your project before it starts, but rather to simply point out some of these high and low points that naturally occur in the course of most remodeling projects. This way, you will have a realistic idea of what to expect.

Demolition:

Every remodeling job creates a certain amount of disorder, dust, uncertainty, and inconvenience. You will see new faces in and around your home on a regular basis. Most likely some of our qualified affiliates that you may or may not have ever seen before. This is when the crew will be tearing apart your house and putting it back together again!

We understand that this can be an unsettling experience, but accordingly J.Bailey Design Reno's, is confident that our clients will appreciate our professional affiliate crews and (possible) subcontractors. Our job is to respect your home and help you enjoy your remodeling experience. If in any case there is a problem our Project Managers will want to know immediately. If you have any concernswe can take immediate steps to correct them.

The insides of your house will be exposed at certain times. Electrical, heating, or plumbing services may be intermittently interrupted during this time. Dust, dirt, debris piles, and dumpsters will be visible in and around the work area; all of this can be rather stressful.

However, don't worry -- the demolition phase can go quickly, and cleaned up can proceed just as rapidly. Once the framing nears completion, clients usually feel very optimistic and start to see the project is progressing as scheduled.

Planning and Permits:

Remodeling proceeds in stages. One of the most difficult stages that we will help with is working through the plan and permit process. After this stage the work will be well worth it as your ideas are turned into working construction drawings.

Post Framing and Inspections:

Once the framing is completed the plumbing, electrical and mechanical work will begain. At this time the project can appear to slow down because at this part of the project progress things are not as visible as in the framing phase. However, truly a lot of important detail work will be done at this time including many required inspections by building officials. It's very critical that the work be done thoroughly at this point prior to insulating and closing the walls with drywall.

Drywall & Sheetrock:

Next is the drywall stage. Walls are covered with drywall and the rooms take on their true proportions. Suddenly clients can start to imagine what it will be like to move back in to a new space.

Finish Work:

The final phase after the drywall, can seem to take the longest but is imporant not to rush.
The finish work -- grading and exterior concrete flat work
  • Interior and exterior painting
  • Installation of all interior doors and finish woodwork
  • Installation of cabinets, tile, and floor coverings
  • Installation of finish plumbing and electrical fixtures
  • Installation of shelving, closet poles, mirrors, glass shower doors, hardware, appliances, etc.

This requires a fair amount of time and the efforts from many of our different affiliate subcontractors.

Nevertheless, thanks to J.Bailey Design Reno's well-planned and coordinated scheduling effort during this phase, the day arrives when your project is completed. Finally, your house is once again your private residence, free of the constant construction activity that has transformed your ideas and plans into the new space ready for you to enjoy.
