The second quarterly Home Design Trends Survey results are in, focusing specifically on overall home layout and use in the first quarter of 2010.

The survey found the prolonged economic downturn in the housing market, coupled with growing concerns about rising utility costs, has resulted in greater interest in smaller homes and lot sizes. Also, Canadian, households are forgoing upscale amenities, opting instead to invest in more low maintenance projects.

“We continue to move away from the ‘McMansion’ chapter of residential design, with more demand for practicality throughout the home,” said AIA chief economist Kermit Baker. “And with that there has been a drop-off in the popularity of upscale property enhancements, such as formal landscaping, decorative water features, tennis courts and gazebos.”

Accessibility within the home also continues to be a concern, and there is an increasing demand for more flexible design and informal space within homes that allow for both ease in movement and foster family living.

Business conditions for residential architects are beginning to indicate improving conditions with the first quarterly increase in billings since mid-2007.

The Home Design Trend Survey is conducted quarterly with a panel of 500 architecture firms that concentrate their practice in the residential sector. Business conditions are also monitored on a quarterly basis. The next survey will take place in September and focus on specialty rooms and systems, followed by December’s survey on community design trends.
INDUSTRY STYLE TRENDS

With the renewed atmosphere of change, hope, and growth that exists today, color and design styles are in a state of creational flux. The influences of the global community, our openness to change, and our return to essential comforts have resulted in exciting new adaptations to our design schemes. It has never been a better time to spark a change. Industry trends that have occurred over the past five years are as follows:

Modern InfluenceThe accessibility of luxuries have inspired many to transform their homes into havens. Elegance without excess, clarity without emptiness, this style is forged through a fusion of the sharp, graphic elements and bold color use of modern design with the ornate, textural, and luxurious elements of Glamor Styling.

Eastern Influence: As our world seemingly gets smaller, our awareness of other cultures broadens. To many, these cultural influences have revealed the beauty of the world's ethnic histories and customs. The expanding influence of Eastern culture through its minimalist philosophies, colorful foods and fabrics, and intricate design patterns has sparked a renewed interest in this global style. Introducing decor elements and colors from the traditions of another culture can create a unique and striking fashion of styles

Vintage Chic: The trend towards cherishing vintage pieces has encouraged us to embrace the old and combine it with the new. Delicate and feminine, fun and eclectic, this revival style is about creativity, possibilities and fusion. With a focus on individual beauty and form, vintage decor is redefined in modern settings.

Geometric Design: A desire for clarity and peace in a busy world has inspired many to simplify their lives. Influenced largely by Japanese design, modern styling seeks order, focus, and functionality through coherent and simplified structures. By integrating geometric shapes and various finishes with elemental color combinations, spaces with refined elegance are created.

Green Design- KitchensA well-designed, attractive kitchen gives a home life. All that liveliness, though, is probably the single biggest energy drain in your home. Lighting, refrigeration and cooking are responsible for 41.5 percent of a home's energy consumption, according to the Canadian Department of Energy estimates. Add to that regular kitchen activities like water heating, plus space heating and cooling, and you begin to get the picture of how critical the kitchen really is. When remodeling, the kitchen presents a big opportunity to improve the home's energy performance. Broadening the scope of your project to include energy efficiency, ecological benefits, accessibility and health considerations will provide long-term cost savings, comfort, peace of mind and safety

Environmentally Friendly DesignWe all know the importance of green living and eco friendly solutions so it only makes sense that as designers we make conscious decisions to reduce our design footprints. For every ton of paper that is recycled you can save 7,000 gallons of water, 380 gallons of oil and enough electricity to power an average house for six months. Hot Color CombosJust as the popularity of single colors waxes and wanes, so does the popularity of color combinations. Brown and blue has been a favorite for several years and predictions state it will be a favorite through 2011. Many designers believe that the brown will be lighter (tan, caramel and camel), rather than chocolate. For the last few years, black and white has been a popular combination in the European market, but trends have noticed that it's making its way across the pond. While many have seen it more in accent pieces, like textiles and wallpaper, recent studies suggests it will take over entire rooms and recommends pairing it with hot accent colors like red or acid green for the latest look.

Home StagingHome staging is just as hot today as it was last year. In this tumultuous real estate market every small touch matters. Home stagers are learning that a few areas really bring the biggest bang for the buck for homeowners. Some of the home staging trends right now include:

Media Rooms: An LCD projection TV with a large screen and a plush sofa is all you require to make your own media room. The media room is no longer a luxury restricted to the most affluent pop stars, movie stars and the super-rich but a basic necessity in nowadays' houses.

Mud Rooms with CubbiesI (Owner Jonathan Bailey) have always envied my friends who had mudrooms in their homes. All newly built homes do have mudrooms by the garage side or by the backdoor. Apart from the mudrooms, a lot of stand-alone pottery barns also look quite beautiful and are growing in design.

Laundry Rooms: There are more and more people who prefer a laundry room in the upstairs which is completely self-sufficient. People want to have a laundry room with enough space to wash, dry, fold, iron and in some cases even to sew clothes.

Complete Closets: Closets are getting bigger - big enough to accommodate a occasional chair or chaise, exercise equipment, books, etc are also getting the thumbs up from new home owners. There are some who even prefer to have a ballet bar or a wall of mirrors in their closet!

See Through Walls: See through gas hearths, aquariums, etc, are beginning to double-up as trendy and unconventional room dividers.
